100 gecs is an American hyperpop duo formed in 2015 that consists of Dylan Brady and Laura Les.[7] [8] [ix] They self-released their debut anthology, 1000 Gecs, in 2019 to critical acclaim, followed by a "companion"[iii] remix album, 1000 Gecs and the Tree of Clues, in July 2020. Their music has been noted for its often chaotic however tricky mixture of various styles,[7] [10] and has been described as exemplifying the 2010s genre hyperpop.[1]

History [edit]

2015–2018: Formation and cocky-titled EP [edit]

Brady and Les, who lived just miles autonomously in the St. Louis area (Kirkwood and Webster Groves, respectively), kickoff met during high schoolhouse at a rodeo.[11] [4] Even so, they starting time had the idea to collaborate after coming together again at a house party in 2012.[12] In the winter of 2015, Les and Brady starting time produced music together, recording in Chicago[xiii] [4] and eventually self-releasing their first EP, 100 Gecs, on July 12, 2016. The origin of the name "100 Gecs" is disputed, equally Brady and Les have given varying and contradictory explanations in interviews.[xiv]

2019–2020: 1000 Gecs and chiliad Gecs and the Tree of Clues [edit]

Despite plans to record more music, they were unable to observe enough fourth dimension until they performed a "breakout"[15] DJ set together for the 2019 Minecraft Fire Festival.[11] Following that collaboration, they continued to work on songs and released their debut album, one thousand Gecs, on May 31, 2019, to positive reviews.[sixteen] [17] [18] According to Volition Pritchard of The Independent, the album helped to consolidate the eclectic 2010s "hyperpop" style by taking the genre "to its well-nigh extreme, and extremely tricky, conclusions: stadium-sized trap beats processed and distorted to well-nigh-destruction, overwrought emo vocals and cascades of ravey arpeggios."[1]

In September 2019, it was announced that 100 Gecs and Slowthai would support Brockhampton on their Heaven Belongs to You Tour[19] later that year,[xx] 100 Gecs also headlined 6 boosted shows of their own in diverse cities along the bout.[xviii] In November 2019, the duo appeared on the Adult Swim web series FishCenter Alive and performed the songs "800db Cloud" and "Stupid Equus caballus" in front end of a green screen backdrop of an aquarium.[21] 100 Gecs were named an "Artist Yous Need to Know" by Rolling Stone in 2019.[22] New York Times music critic Jon Caramanica called 1000 Gecs the best album of 2019,[23] and it was rated among the best albums of the year past Fissure Mag,[24] Noisey,[25] Paper,[26] Pitchfork,[27] and Stereogum.[28] Towards the terminate of 2019, Brady announced a remix album[29] past the duo tentatively titled 1000 Gecs & th3 phant0m m3nac3 and set to feature artists including A. M. Cook. The album was later retitled thou Gecs and the Tree of Clues, which Les referred to as "a companion to the original".[3] Tree of Clues was released on July 10, 2020.[thirty]

Several singles were released prior to the album. A.Thou. Cook's remix of "Money Motorcar" was released in October 2019, followed past Injury Reserve'south remix of "745 Sticky" in Nov 2019.[ citation needed ] "Ringtone (Remix)", featuring Charli XCX, Rico Nasty, and Kero Kero Bonito, was released in February 2020.[ citation needed ] 100 Gecs signed with Atlantic Records in 2020. [t]here's and so many things that they could help us achieve".[3] In October 2020, 100 Gecs commenced an artist residency at New York Academy's Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music.[31] Earlier the COVID-19 pandemic, they were scheduled to perform at Coachella in Apr 2020.[32] [12] 100 Gecs headlined another Minecraft festival, Square Garden, in April 2020, along with musical artists Charli XCX, Kero Kero Bonito, Dorian Electra, and Cashmere Cat.[33] In June 2020, they stated in an interview with The Xl V that they hoped to provide the soundtrack to a Disney movie.[34] In August 2020, it was announced that 100 Gecs would perform at the Reading and Leeds Festivals in August 2021.[35] On November 15, 2020, they released the stand up-lone unmarried "Lonely Machines" with American ring 3OH!iii.[36] They followed this up with the Christmas song "Sympathy four the Grinch".[37]

Brady produced several tracks for Rico Nasty in 2020, for case the August release "iPhone"[38] and the November release "OHFR?", both of which were singles from her debut album Nightmare Holiday (2020).[39] The production of several other tracks on the anthology were likewise credited to both Brady and Les, collectively under "100 gecs".[twoscore]

2021–present: 10000 Gecs [edit]

In early 2021, the grouping released a remix of Linkin Park'south "One Step Closer" to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Linkin Park's debut studio album, Hybrid Theory.[41] Later on, they embarked on contained projects, with Les releasing her debut solo unmarried "Haunted" in March,[42] and Brady releasing the debut album of his band Cake Pop, Cake Popular 2, in Apr.[43]

In July 2021, the duo announced the 10000 Gecs Tour, with shows in North America set to take place from October to December.[44] On September 6, 100 Gecs appear their second studio album, 10000 Gecs.[45] Co-ordinate to Pitchfork'southward Steven Horowitz, the album is more mainstream and "mature" in its sound than their previous works, and will feature songs where Les is heard without the duo's trademark autotune.[46] The North American leg of the 10000 Gecs Tour started on October 8 at the Play tricks Theater in Oakland, California,[47] [44] and concluded on December ix, at the Concluding 5 music venue in New York Metropolis,[44] which was also broadcast on the live streaming service Twitch.[48] On November nineteen, 100 Gecs released the first single off the anthology, "mememe", during their bout, with an accompanying kaleidoscopic music video featuring the pair dancing in wizard robes.[49]

Four days into the tour, more dates were announced for the Europe 2022 leg of the 10000 Gecs Tour, originally set to start in Moscow in Jan, and closing out in London in February,[50] but these were delayed until Baronial and September.[51] Several 2022 music festival lineups with 100 Gecs were appear in late 2021 and early on 2022, such as BUKU, gear up to have place in New Orleans in March;[52] Ceremonia in Mexico City in April;[53] Coachella in Indio, California in Apr;[54] Forecastle in Louisville in May;[55] Governors Brawl in Queens, New York in June (after pulling out of the festival the previous year);[56] and Bonnaroo in Manchester, Tennessee in June.[57]

On April 12, 2022, 100 Gecs released "Doritos & Fritos" every bit the second single for 10000 Gecs, along with an accompanying visualizer.[58] The song marks a departure from their established sound, carrying more characteristics of alt-rock than hyperpop.[59]

Brady has said 100 Gecs' style is influenced by Breathe Carolina, John Zorn,[13] and I See Stars, amid others.[11] Les calls their musical process "[v]ery much virtually an improv mentality"[11] and has said that they "endeavour to have fun and write songs that we would want to heed to",[8] adding that "the whole idea of labeling genres is not super important to united states of america".[13] Les became interested in making music as a teenager when she got her first guitar; she has said that she "kind of e'er merely wanted to be a songwriter" and "beloved[due south] annihilation with a catchy melody".[68] [69] She has cited Naked City, Playboi Carti, 3OH!3, Cannibal Corpse,[13] and diverse PC Music artists every bit influences.[63] Both of them were heavily inspired by Skrillex'due south song "Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites".[70] [71]

Laura Les [edit]

Les now releases music under her own proper noun. Nevertheless, she formerly[68] released music under the moniker osno1.[74] [75] Les has cited being transgender equally contributing to her exploration of dissimilar singing styles, including pitched-upwards "nightcore fashion" vocals, which she now uses almost exclusively in her music.[76] In Chicago, she worked at a "cross between a coffee store and an empanada eating place"[71] and studied acoustical engineering earlier switching to applied science ("I'chiliad just gonna practise [music], and study something else", she said)[15] in college.[13] As of 2020[update], she lives in Chicago with her husband Gabriel.[64] [77]
